Chapter 13

I didn’t want to turn the TV on and risk waking Jake up again, so I grabbed my iPad and decided to do a bit of investigating myself. After all, Federico Antonini had to be the killer, but we still needed to find proof. So I did what any millennial would do, and I went onto Facebook.

I searched his name and scrolled through a few things before finding his account. Looking at his friends list, I recognized a few names, including that of our victim, Andrew Silverton.

It looked like Federico didn’t actually use his Facebook account all that much. His cover photo was a picture of the Roman Forum, and his profile picture was his official university headshot. If he had anything on the account, almost none of it was set to public. He also didn’t have a spouse listed.

That was too bad; I was hoping to find something useful in there.

I scrolled back up and clicked on the profile of Andrew Silverton. He had been a regular poster, constantly sharing articles and the like about Ancient Rome, until a few months ago when it all suddenly stopped. The timeline lined up with when we were told he had started working harder, and I suddenly found myself curious about what it was he had been looking into.

I got up off the couch, left Jake a note apologizing for not being here in case he woke up, and went back to King’s College.

Silverton’s office was cordoned off with police tape now, the door sealed to prevent unwanted intrusions. I called DCI Williams, not wanting to break the law any more often than I had to.

“Williams,” he answered.

“Hey, it’s Cassie,” I said.

“Oh hi,” he replied, audibly more cheerful. “What can I do for you?”

“You know how Violet wanted you to look into what Silverton was working on? Did you end up getting anywhere with that?”

“No, I had a couple officers on it, but they told me it all looked like general Roman stuff. Nothing that looked in any way important.”

“Would you mind if I had a look in the office? It’s sealed now, and I don’t want to break the seal without your permission.”

“Sure. Let me just call the main reception. They’ll send someone down with a key.”

“I appreciate that.”

There was silence on the other end of the line for a moment, and then DCI Williams spoke again. “Um, I was wondering if you know how close you and Violet might be to solving this case. I’m afraid we’ve reached a little bit of an impasse, and I’m not quite sure where to proceed from here?”

I could picture DCI Williams wiping his hand across his face on the other end of the line. “Let me guess, you thought Chantelle was the killer, but you’ve since discovered she has an alibi?”

“Yeah,” he replied. “I was quite chuffed about seeing the corgi in the picture when we interviewed Professor Armitage. I thought for sure we had our killer, but then I asked her for an alibi and it checked out perfectly.
